The most common type of hearing loss is neuro-sensory or sensorineural hearing loss. This is also commonly known as nerve loss. Nerve loss is caused by damaged or worn hair cells inside the ear, commonly occurring as we age. Because these hair or nerve cells cannot be regenerated, the only treatment for this type of hearing loss is amplification from hearing instruments.
Numerous studies have shown a correlation between better hearing with hearing instruments and improved quality of life. Hearing instruments help improve our ability to communicate with loved ones and the world around us. Untreated hearing loss can negatively affect family relationships, social activities and work performance. Untreated hearing loss can also make it difficult to hear very important situations such as a siren, warning alarm or a doctors medication directions.
